	"What does nature give you, and what do you give it back?" This question inspired artist Beth Wong to develop her installation Dōnō, built around a birchwood structure with eleven materials that reflect the Terschelling landscape. With a poetic eye, she explores our place as humans in nature and how we relate to what the landscape provides.

As a temporary islander on Terschelling, Beth explored a diverse landscape, with beaches, dunes, heathland, and forests. To get to know the landscape, she spent time with locals, who showed her how they forage and grow food and listened to their stories about the island. This is how she learned about the cranberry, a plant that, like herself, arrived on the island as an outsider. Although this plant is now inextricably linked to the island, Beth became fascinated by the bog myrtle, a native plant with aromatic leaves used in beer, among other things.The idea that she, as an outsider, could focus on a shrub with native roots intrigued her and formed a key starting point for her new work. She wrote the poem "Myrica Tale," a poetic reference to the sweet gale (Myrica gale): a declaration of love about how a native shrub protects and takes other plants and animals under its wing.

In Dōnō, Beth explores the reciprocal relationship between humans and nature. Nature is fluid; species come and go. A place where native and exotic species converge, adapt, and re-establish roots. What position do we take in this? And how can we relate with humility to the land and what it gives us?

Not all the materials in the installation, such as cranberries and bog myrtle, but also salt, water, and incense, are immediately visible. The installation functions as a spiritual space that honours the island's materials: a tool for offerings, attention, and devotion, while simultaneously inviting reflection.

		<description>Have You Eaten?
	Presented during Museumnacht FRL on 27 September, as part of VHDG’s art manifestation Among New Faces at Natuurmuseum Fryslân.&#38;nbsp;

We screened our short film Are You Home? along with its follow-up episode, Have you Eaten?, an installation and performative piece. Visitors could watch our video, taste a Taiwanese dessert, make taro balls, exchange Frisian farming knowledge, and craft paper bamboo hats with us.


It is a collaboration between Chao Huang and Beth Wong. Assisted by Diana Ferro, Monica Bono, and Kaman Lam.

	About Have You Eaten?After settling on an isolated plot of land in Bierum, two fictional East Asian farmers venture to the local farmers’ market with a few new friends. Together, they set up a stand where they prepare one of Taiwan’s most beloved foods: 芋圓 (taro balls). The audience receives a serving in return for sharing stories, practical tips, or other local knowledge about Frisian farming. Traditionally made with taro, sweet potato, and tapioca starch, tonight’s recipe has been reimagined using Dutch ingredients and takes inspiration from Italian gnocchi. Guests are also warmly invited to join the food preparation and the conversations. This live performance continues the story from the short film "Are You Home?", which explores what it means to adapt to a new environment. Here, at the Museum Night, a sense of belonging is pursued through people. How do we adapt to each other?

Exhibited at&#38;nbsp;KEL-30 for “Echoes of the Biotope“ 
For my project at KEL-30, I engage directly with the physical traces of the past. Drawing inspiration from the Biotoop Haren building’s former life as a scientific and botanical laboratory, I approach the work as an experiment in itself—blending found objects with organic materials. I construct structures from locally sourced bamboo and dye mul cotton using pigments extracted from garden plants. Through this process, I seek to reconstruct a fictional history and trace the transformation of repurposed spaces. What has been lost? What lingers? And what new forms are coming into being?

“Are You Home?” is a collaboration with Chao Huang that intertwines our personal story with themes of belonging and identity.During our time in the Netherlands, we noticed significant differences between our social lives here and those back home. As artists from Taiwan and Hong Kong, our experiences have inspired us to reflect on colonial histories, cultural merging, and the ongoing challenges of establishing oneself away from home.

We have created two fictional characters: farmers of East Asian background who arrive at Bierumer School. They represent the experience of newcomers adapting to their surroundings, echoing the journeys of our ancestors who settled in unfamiliar places with their agricultural knowledge. Through farming activities such as seed collecting and land preparation, we explore the nuanced process of settling in.

The project culminates in a video documenting our journey and dialogues as farmers, reflecting on belonging and feeling at home in a new place.

☼About the concept and process𓅰

I conducted artistic research to explore how to convey quietness and nuanced storytelling through art on a monumental scale. The initial plan is to re-perform “Flying Moustache”. The painting was inspired by birds that resembled mustaches against the vast sky.
As I worked on the project, the idea evolved and became more site-specific. I began to ask questions about the space and its connection to my stories. I also looked into what flying objects mean to me symbolically. This led me to write a poem/riddle, which served as the basis for The Wall.

This piece was exhibited in the group show ♡⑅• Long grass, short life •⑅♡ ‘a recipe for clumping’. 
During the 2-week residency, I created a quilted tapestry from donated fabrics by the members of Piccardthof. Depicted are shared memories and garden-inspired imagery. For this work, I diverged from my usual painting practice to embrace textiles and sewing. I visited members of Piccardthof at their garden homes to talk to them about their cherished memories, to connect with them, and to further explore the garden’s meditative role. Displayed on the terrace of the community hub, this work is intended to encourage community engagement and add warmth to the space.

	“Capturing the Horizon” was performed on 14th Dec 2023, at DIHAN 23 No. 5.
During the 8-minute piece, I traced the horizon with a pencil. The line crawled and shifted between the landscapes. It ends with a poem about horizontal lines—an experiment for performative drawing.

	“East of the Sun and West of the Moon” was presented by The Kunsthof as the second duo exhibition, featuring works by Northern artists Erica Scheper and Beth Wong from two different generations.&#38;nbsp;
	

About the title of the exhibition: It was suggested by Erica, and I remember her mentioning that it was inspired by the title of a jazz song. I was immediately drawn to the visual imagery it evokes. In my mind, I picture a cyclical movement—the sun and moon shifting positions, marking the passage of time with their dance. Later, I listened to the lyrics of the song. It carries a gentle, romantic atmosphere that I feel aligns with the mood of our work.
